Alpha

Switched from the Sony RX100 VII to a Sony Alpha 6400.

It’s a bit weird as I just wrote a week ago how much I liked the RX100 VII and how I wanted to use it more and cut a bit back on overusing the Canon 2000D from Nadine.

The ISO performance was solid with the RX100, the AF zones too. But the zoom lever felt like a barrier, the viewfinder was too small for me when I was wearing glasses and the PTP connectivity was buggy.

Coincidentally my sister was looking to upgrade from a very old Canon EOS 1000D and I had been supporting her research efforts. She has basic knowledge of photography, so we went to test a few options and ended up trying a Sony Alpha 6400 kit - price was a limiting factor for her. What can I say, when testing with her it clicked for me. The haptics of the Alpha 6400 were great, it’s on the heavier end which I prefer over lighter ones, and the software and technology felt like a natural evolution of the RX100. The second-hand market for lenses looked very healthy too, which I learned shortly after.

Long story short, I sold the RX100 for a good price to a local photo store and got a 6400 kit plus an extra 50-210mm lens. Given the high initial price of the RX100, the switch was close to cost neutral.

For actual bird photography I am planning a dedicated setup, going to share more in a few weeks.
